The City of Bath, a World Heritage Site, has attracted visitors since the Romans made use of the thermal Springs. One of the most ancient and stately cities in England, with a history enthralling in its interest and rich in its associations with times gone by, is now firmly established on the United Kingdom tourist trail and is an ideal location for weekend breaks.
Its churches, monuments, gardens and thoroughfares are unusually majestic and combine to give Bath a proud position among the cities of Europe. The remains of the Roman Baths are the best preserved Roman religious spa from the ancient world, the finest in Western Europe, and nowhere is the architecture of the Early Georgian period so well illustrated. Attractions include the Assembly Rooms, the medieval Bath Abbey, Bath Cathedral, the Pump Room, No1 Royal Crescent, the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath Postal Museum, Museum of Bath at Work, and the American Museum in Britain.
As a touring centre Bath offers exceptional opportunities. Wells, the gem of English cathedral cities; Glastonbury, with its legends of the Holy Grail and King Arthur, and its beautiful Glastonbury Abbey ruins which like Wells Cathedral still show the skills and taste of the craftsmen of the Middle Ages, and the great Druidical monuments of Stonehenge are all within an easy run of Bath.
The county of Somerset is celebrated in nearly every phase of English history, from the previously mentioned King Arthur and the Isle of Avalon, and the less remote period when King Alfred burnt the cakes in the Isle of Athelney, down to the comparatively recent times when the Duke of Monmouth was defeated at Sedgemoor, and Judge Jeffreys held the Bloody Assize at Taunton.
There is plenty to keep you occupied in Bath for a weekend break.
